Michigan State coach Tom Izzo landed the first member of the Class of 2009 in Garrick Sherman, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound center from Kenton, Ohio.

Izzo offered Sherman a scholarship in December. Sherman accepted the offer last Wednesday.

"I just told him that I wanted to accept the scholarship offer and I wanted to be a Spartan," Sherman said.

Sherman also received scholarship offers from Notre Dame and Purdue, but said choosing MSU wasn't difficult.

"The coaching staff is just awesome. It's a great program with lots of tradition," Sherman said. "It's in the Big Ten and it's always been a dream of mine to play in the Big Ten."

Sherman, ranked as the No. 1 player in Ohio by PrepSpotlight.com, averaged 23.6 points, 15.5 rebounds and five blocked shots per game in leading Kenton to a 17-5 record this season.

"He's a combo post player," said John Stovall, PrepSpotlight.com's Ohio correspondent. "He can play on the block. He can also play high. He can handle the ball and do those things. If I was going to compare him to somebody it would be (Goran) Suton.

"He's got decent strength, but he needs to get stronger. He's a little bit more athletic than Suton."
