Nagel bows out in Women's Amateur

ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP - The glow of winning medalist honors lasted only a day for Michigan State's Liz Nagel, who lost in the first round of match play at the Michigan Women's Amateur.

Nagel, from DeWitt, had a two-round total of five-under 139 to lead the field after stroke play at the St. Clair River Country Club. But as match play began Wednesday, Sarah Hoffman of Grand Valley State beat Nagel 1-up.

Defending champion and No. 2 stroke play finisher Britney Hamilton of Western Michigan defeated Leah Grawburg, 7-and-6. Match play runs through Friday.

Six other Spartans and MSU coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll also competed Wednesday. Slobodnik-Stoll defeated Heather Marks, 5-and-4. In a pair of Spartan vs. Spartan matchups, Christine Meier defeated Lindsey McPherson in 19 holes and Maddi Massa topped Shannon Warner, 2-up. MSU's Natalie Brehm advanced with a 3-and-1 win over Kelly Hartigan and Michelle Bowles lost to Meagan Bauer, 3-and-1.

Bree Baumgartner of Perry lost to Amy Meier, 5-and-4, and East Lansing's Jenn Cleary fell against Melissa Beurmann, 2-up.
